Discuss the president's decision to end his bid for re election and everything we can expect. Next is Babylon town supervisor and Suffolk Democratic Party chairman Rick Schafer. Good morning Rich. Thanks for joining us. Um No one really knows for sure. But I'll ask you since you will be in this process. What is this going to look like as Democrats try to figure out who their candidate will be? We, as you said, we've got to refer back to the history books to see and, and I don't think that anyone can predict how this is gonna turn out. Obviously, I think Vice President Harris has the inside track. But as you said, I think there are a number of other candidates that need to be given serious consideration. Uh I think uh people like uh Governor Josh Shapiro from Pennsylvania, Governor Gretchen Whitmer from uh Michigan, uh even uh Governor Cooper in North Carolina, some of the uh uh leaders who have been out on the trail advocating for uh President Biden and Vice President Harris. And I think it would be smart on the part of and look, this is above my pay grade uh in the leadership uh pecking order of the Democratic Party. But I think it would be smart if we just took a deep breath and uh gave everybody the fullest consideration before we make a choice. Uh later in August, is that the most important thing rich, uh you being a head of a party and someone who kind of has to lead a party is that the best thing to do right now, what do Democrats have to do right now to show the American people that they're gonna get this together. Uh I think, listen, I think we do have a about a week and a half to two weeks. Uh It's summertime, a lot of people are focused on many other things. Uh Obviously, the Republicans have selected their candidate and Donald Trump. Uh We're taking time out to thank President Biden for his many years of service. He's been an outstanding leader uh over the years, not just as president, but in the United States Senate and as vice president. And I think that the party elders uh need to come together and be able to really have a serious conversation about where we want this party going. And obviously, I've been an advocate for taking a more moderate approach to many of the issues. And I think that the names that I've mentioned uh have done that in their uh uh respective positions as governors, uh mostly as executives and they've proven that they can lead uh, states like Pennsylvania or Michigan. And they need to be given the fullest consideration not to take anything away from vice president for the work that she has done. And obviously I said she's got the inside track, but I think that we need to have a serious conversation over the next two weeks about where our party is going and where we want to lead the country. Biden's decision to drop out of the race. Everyone is focusing on now. What's next? That's right. Joining us right now to break it down is political analyst, Mike Titia, Mike. Good to see you again. Um As you had the chance to sleep on it, although not for too long. What's your reaction uh this morning? And how would you define the state of the race? Well, certainly in flux and, and I'm and I'm uh agree with that a little bit of sleep. Uh But the, the, the big thing here again is this rush to judgment um to choose and, and lock down the nomination for vice president Harris is uh they couldn't have had time to do the research they needed to do. Um We, we do know is that our approval ratings uh nationally are 38.6%. Our dis approval rating is 50.4. What we don't know and what the Democrats certainly should have known before. They rushed to make this decision is what is her approval ratings in those key swing states that make the decision, those key electoral vote states that will decide who's the president? What are her numbers in Michigan. What are her numbers in Wisconsin? What are they in Arizona? That and, and the Democrats couldn't have done that research because if they had, they would have signaled to the whole world that Biden was dropping out, which they didn't want to do. So, they couldn't have done this research and they can't have it. So how well and good competitive candidate she's going to be, um, can't be known and yet they're rushing to, to secure the nomination for her. Well, will those important states? Now, uh say Harris gets the nomination? They'll obviously play a role now on who will be on her ticket if that is the correct uh moving forward from there. True. But you can only pick one, I mean, say you pick Mark Kelly and you, and you nail down Arizona. Ok. That's Arizona. But you know, there's still, there's still a whole lot of electoral votes out there up for grabs, you know, and, and you know, one of the things that you just mentioned was the 68 race um where Hubert Humphrey, the vice president who was not a war hawk, who was very, very liberal uh politician uh but was forced in a position of defending Lyndon Johnson's prosecution of the Vietnam war. And that was the reason why he lost the 68 race. Now, Harris is being put in that same situation of defending Biden's record on immigration and inflation. So you could be seeing history repeat itself here. Also the border policy which the president put the vice president in charge of at least in some form or fashion. All right, Mike. Of the presidential race and all morning, we're getting reaction and insight from experts on both sides of the aisle and joining us right now is actually one of the delegates in the Democratic National Committee, Robert Zimmerman. Robert, thanks for joining us first. I wanna give you a chance to respond there to what Mike Deitz had to say. He feels Democrats have rushed into a Harris presidential ticket. What's your reaction? Do you agree? Hardly the case at all. I was uh as a Democratic national committeeman, I was very proud to endorse her yesterday and urge my colleagues in the Democratic National Committee and members of Congress as well to stand up and endorse her candidacy. Uh She is well known in democratic circles. She's well known amongst congressional leadership and certainly amongst the public at large as a vice president for the past four years. And I think in that regard, uh there's a great recognition uh of who she is, but more important than all that. There has been ongoing research throughout the entire process from both parties, evaluating how their presidential candidates might run and their vice presidential candidates run. So, uh clearly, Mike is right that the swing states are going to be those battleground states are going to be essential. But she certainly is producing the kind of energy and excitement already uh that we have not seen before in this campaign. I mean, I think in the first five hours Democrats raised over $30 million on her behalf and small dollar donations, which speaks to grassroots support. But more than that, the groundswell you're seeing for her is because of the strong popular appeal she has on the grassroots level. And that's very encouraging, the party needs it for people who uh may not understand what happens. Now. We haven't seen this happen in, in ages. So what happens next in this nomination process? What's happening leading up to the convention? Well, you know, it's a very, it's, that's really the key to it all because, you know, you talk about having more time. We have a very limited window right now with our convention kicking off August 18th. So first and foremost, Vice President Harris would make the declaration of her candidacy. Others are open to jumping as well. But I think every candidate's going to evaluate, do they have a path for the nomination? I think Vice President Harris has shown already that she's got strong broad support around the country and she could very well have this secured way before the convention. Uh But first is the nominating process, then she has to select her vice presidential choice that will be made at the convention. Uh But there is the issue we have to look at too about ballot access already. Speaker Mike Johnson, the Republican house speaker is threatening to try to block uh Democrats from being on the ballots around the country because we're shifting from uh President Biden to vice President Harris. And there'll be the issue of the Ohio rule in Ohio. You have to be nominated by August 7th. So will there be virtual balloting? That's also what something lawyers have to figure out. But it's, uh it's really a very clear process. We're gonna have a convention. We'll certainly have our share of drama, that's for sure. But I think it's also worth reflecting on this morning. The, the really why Joe Biden with his announcement yesterday will really be remembered as an historic and transformational president. Very few people walk away from power and very few people give up a nomination. That's theirs. He had 90% of the delegates. He had the money in the bank. But he made a determination that for the sake of his office and for the sake of doing his job, he wasn't going to be focusing on a re-election battle and I think really put the country and the nation's agenda before his own political agenda and Donald Trump can never say that. On the future of that 2024 presidential race. Now that President Biden has ended his bid for re election, the Republican eyes on this process as well. Joining us right now, former Congressman Peter King of Seaford Congressman. Good to have you on with us this morning. How do you view this process now? From the Republican perspective on the outside looking in, well, in many ways, the race is the same. I mean, Joe Biden was one of the most unpopular presidents ever, but actually, uh Kamala Harris had lower ratings than Joe Biden did. Her views are the same as his on the key issue of immigration. She was supposedly in charge of immigration at the border. It's the worst uh uh border security we've had in decades, maybe forever. So I I think people on Long Island especially, you see, you saw the impact of illegal immigration. So the impact it's having on issues like crime and other issues like that. The environment, I would say that uh Republican voters, not just Republican voters, independents and many conservative Democrats, as you heard there from, you know, from uh Shafer, the the Democratic Party has gone too far to the left. He's looking for a more moderate candidate that, you know, they're not going to find that in Kamala Harris. So I would say that President Trump right now, I was in very good shape. So long as he focused on the, on the, on the issues, Kamala Harris, uh she has really shown no leadership ability. I'm not trying to denigrate her, but so far she hasn't shown much. I think it's more of the same as far as they're talking about President Trump's age. Uh He, he's, he's the youngest 78 year old ever. When you look at him, he has the energy to go on forever. So I don't see uh that being an issue. It all, I say it's the Biden record, the Harris record and the fact that her views are out of sync with certainly the people here in Long Island, you know, we were just talking about it before in the commercial break, Pete just about how many things have happened in the past two weeks or so. Um talking about each story would have been uh uh uh like you said, a year long kind of uh media cycle and the fact that these things just keep going and going and going. Yeah, it's almost happening too fast to keep up with. I mean, you know, we're almost taking it for granted. But when people look back on this, they're gonna say you had the debate which was such a disaster. You had all the pressure on Joe Biden to get out. You had the assassination attempt on President Trump. Now you have Joe Biden uh leaving on, on a Sunday afternoon. Uh This is so much happening at once. The country, the country was in two up before uh June 27th of this year. Now, since then, it's just going at such a rapid pace. I hope we can have an intelligent campaign on both sides to get a lot of the name calling and just get the job done. Talk about the key issues from an issue point of view. But no, we are part of history. Whether we fully appreciate it at the time. There's gonna be books written about this period for years to come. We always talk about the potential for an October surprise. We didn't wait till October this year. We know about that former Congressman King. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you.
