Police: Yonkers man charged in fatal stabbing of 68-year-old woman, leaving her body for days

A Yonkers man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 68-year-old woman at her apartment. and leaving her body on the floor for days.
Police say 21-year-old Deshawn Nunez knew the victim, Renee Spencer, and admitted to killing her. Officials have not disclosed the nature of their relationship.
“This most heinous of crimes, perpetrated upon a defenseless older woman, is horrific and unimaginable," said Yonkers Police Commissioner Chris Sapienza.
Police responded to the St. Casimir apartments at 289 Nepperhan Ave. on Thursday afternoon after a family member of the victim called building management for a welfare check after. That's when the police discovered Spencer's body.
"I saw the police, but I didn't see anything. Somebody told me somebody died," said apartment resident Enoc Pereyra.
Police say surveillance video shows Nunez and Spencer entering the senior housing complex together on Tuesday night -- two days before her body was discovered.
Police say Nunez is seen walking out alone 90 minutes later.
Police arrested Nunez about two miles away on Wednesday. He was taken into custody for multiple active warrants and violating a stay-away order of protection. Those charges include burglary, assault, aggravated harassment, criminal mischief, and criminal possession of a weapon for incidents unrelated to the fatal stabbing.
Police say Spencer's body was found roughly 48 hours after she was killed on her apartment floor surrounded by a blood splatter with multiple stab wounds to her midsection. No one else was at the apartment at that time. A kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.
"She just moved here two weeks ago so it was weird...because...nothing has ever happened like that here," said longtime apartment resident Felix Rivera.
Detectives believe Nunez killed Spencer in retaliation for perceived past incidents involving relatives of the victim, but the case remains under investigation.
Nunez is being held in Westchester County Jail.
