Police say two women used their Planet Fitness memberships to loot the cars of fellow gym members.
Alexandra Salata and Christina Nicosia are accused of looting the cars of gym members at Planet Fitness centers in Bay Shore and Centereach. Four cars were robbed in Centereach and one car was robbed in Bay Shore.
Authorities say the heists involved one woman rummaging through gym lockers for car key fobs while the other waited in the parking lot.
"When they found keys for the car with a transponder, they'd proceed to the front door or windowed area of the gym and press the transponder to identify the vehicle that belonged to the keys," says Detective Lt. Frank Catalina.
Police say the suspects would then steal pocketbooks and credit cards before returning the car key fobs so the victims wouldn't notice. Salata and Nicosia allegedly then used the stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards.
Police say the three-week crime spree came to an end when shopping center security cameras recorded the two committing the crimes.
Salata and Nicosia were each charged with five counts of grand larceny. They face a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted.
