A high school varsity volleyball coach who was facing charges after being accused of raping a teenager while working at Sacred Heart Academy died by suicide.

Attorney John Carman confirmed Saturday afternoon that his client, defendant Jason Maser, died Friday night.

The MTA told News 12 that he stepped in front of a train in Syosset at 10:35 p.m.

Police say 22-year-old Maser, of Syosset, is accused of raping a 15-year-old multiple times during his employment at the school.

He was arrested on Thursday.

Authorities say Maser also worked with B&B Volleyball, a traveling club high school league in Albertson.

Maser played for the league before becoming a coach at 18, according to B&B Volleyball director Mike Brewer.

Part of his training was a course with US Safe Sport. The purpose of the course was to keep the sports community free of sexual assault.

When B&B Volleyball learned about the accusations, they say they immediately cut ties and notified parents.

Manhasset Schools also confirmed that Maser coached the high school boys’ volleyball team in 2022. However, that is his only tie to the district.

On Friday, a Hempstead judge called the charges against Maser extremely serious and set his bail at $75,000. The judge granted an order of protection for the unidentified victim.

The charges against Maser include rape, criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child.

Parents outside Sacred Heart Academy on Friday said they were stunned by the allegations.

Lisa Gutman is an alumnus of the Catholic school, and her daughter is currently a student.

"I trust them implicitly, implicitly. I never in a million years would expect to hear this. Never," she said.

Sacred Heart issued the following statement:

“Sacred Heart Academy is firmly committed to our students' safety and well-being. When Sacred Heart learned of the situation involving Jason Maser, Sacred Heart notified the appropriate authorities and offered all available resources to the family.

In addition, Sacred Heart Academy took immediate steps to ensure that the coach had no further access to Sacred Heart's premises or any School activities. The coach is not currently employed by Sacred Heart Academy.

Due to the ongoing law enforcement investigation, all questions should be directed to the Nassau County Police Department.”
