An officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon in North Amityville left one male suspect injured, police say.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison says two officers were assigned to the First Precinct at 11:45 a.m. and were transporting a prisoner to the station house. He says they then observed an individual who was wanted for a robbery and a missing firearm.
The suspect, 21-year-old Jayvon Bell, ran and the two officers pursued him on Maple Road.
Bell is said to have pulled out a black firearm and fired at least one round at the officers.
Harrison says one of the officers then returned fire, hitting him in the torso before arresting him.
Bell is currently in surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
The officers were treated for tinnitus or ringing in the ears.
Police say they believe Bell could have been involved in gangs on Long Island.
