Police say a Westbury man has been charged with second-degree murder in a fatal Uniondale shooting Monday night.
The suspect has been identified as Joel A. Ayala Deras, 35.
Police say they received a 911 call about a shooting in the area of Macon Place and Irving Place around 9:45 p.m.
Officers say they arrived at the scene to find a 37-year-old man lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police took Deras into custody minutes after the shooting while he was driving away from the scene. Arresting officers say they found two handguns and a shotgun in his vehicle. Acting Commissioner Thomas Krumpter says the shotgun was most likely used in the homicide.
The victim was identified as German Ismael Saravia Melendez, of Uniondale.
Krumpter says the shooting has no ties to gang violence. In fact, a close friend of German's told News 12 that the victim and the suspect knew each other for 10 years in their native El Salvador.
Police say a motive is not yet clear. Deras has been remanded without bail and is due back in court on Friday.
