A police standoff that lasted almost nine hours Friday at a home in Hempstead is finally over.
Police say 23-year-old Dontae McPhaul had barricaded himself on the second floor of his aunt and uncle?s home on Harvard Street. The incident began when Hempstead police showed up at the home to arrest him for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend last week. Police say McPhaul fired several shots at officers before locking himself inside the home.
After negotiations over police radio, McPhaul finally surrendered peacefully around 8:30 a.m. More than 100 police officers were involved in the standoff. Several roads were closed and one home was evacuated as a result of the standoff. McPhaul had served five years in prison for attempted murder.
