A confrontation between a female Elmont deli worker and an armed man turned deadly Wednesday morning when police responded.
Authorities say everything started when the man angrily banged on the window of the Francis Lewis Deli Bakery around 6 a.m., demanding to be let in. When the employee wouldn?t comply, police say the man smashed the front window and entered.
Police say they received a call about a man beating a woman with a bat, but when they responded, they found the man armed with a 1-by-4 and two knives. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapons, but Det. Lt. Kevin Smith says the suspect failed to obey.
After the confrontation, one of the officers shot him. He later died at the hospital.
Police are still investigating and are unsure whether the employee, or the partner of the deli?s owner, who was also present, knew the suspect.
