A Shirley man has been arrested for allegedly killing a person and then setting their body on fire on Saturday.

Police say the suspect, 20-year-old Peter Pendzinkski, lived on Mastic Boulevard West, and burned the body in his backyard around 2:30 a.m.

Officials responded to reports of a fire, and when they arrived they say they found the burning corpse.

The fire was put out and the medical examiner is working to identify the victim and a cause of death. The victim is believed to be a male.

Pendzinski was arrested and charged with second degree murder.

He was hospitalized for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and is set to be arraigned at a later date.
