Police are looking for a suspect in connection with a years-old deadly shooting in Hempstead.
Daniel Flowers is described by his family as a gifted athlete with a sharp sense of humor and wit. It's been almost a year since the 25-year-old Freeport man died after being shot. He was raised by his aunt, Gerry Flowers, who is hoping to finally get justice.
On July 3, 2011, police say Flowers and a group of friends were hanging out on Main Street in Hempstead after leaving a birthday party. That's when his aunt says a man came from a building across the street -- which was a bar at the time -- and got into an argument with the group. A gunshot was fired at one point.
Gerry says the bullet went straight through Flowers's neck and bullet fragments shattered his spine.
The award-winning athlete with a promising future spent the next 4 1/2 years of his life as a quadriplegic. He died Jan. 2, 2016.
