A safe filled with thousands of dollars was stolen from an American Legion Hall, police say.
The incident occurred at the American Legion on Bellmore Road between the hours of 10 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday. Police say it appears that the thieves were wearing gloves during the burglary.
American Legion member John Flower says the safe weighed about 90 pounds and had more than $6,000 in donations inside. He said it took nearly a year to collect the money, which was going to be used toward feeding veterans and purchasing toys for children in need during the holiday season.
Legion commander Larry Fitzsimmons says he was bartending there until about 10 p.m. Monday night. He says the hall was locked up before the theft.
No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the burglary is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
