A 76-year-old Roosevelt woman was scammed out of thousands of dollars in cash, police say.

It happened when the victim was walking home from the grocery store on Debevoise Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say a stranger asked her if she needed help with her bags. The suspect then asked the woman to cash in a winning lottery ticket for him, but wanted jewelry and $2,000 as collateral.

The victim later realized she was scammed and called police.
