A Suffolk County postal worker is now facing charges for allegedly stealing items from envelopes placed in the mail at the Oakdale Post Office.
"We have people who want to enjoy the holiday season, send well wishes to family members, send them a little gift through the mail and it’s getting stolen and it’s simply unacceptable," says Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney.
Investigators say Jovanni Jamison-Lewis, 35, of Mastic Beach, is facing multiple charges, including grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny and official misconduct.
Investigators say she was working as a clerk in the Oakdale Post Office for about a year.
Officials say on Nov. 19, Jamison-Lewis allegedly took two sealed envelopes, that were placed in the United States Postal Service’s custody, out of the outgoing mail bin. Each envelope contained a greeting card and gifts.
Jamison-Lewis allegedly opened each envelope and removed their contents. One envelope held a T.J. Maxx gift card and the other contained three New York State Lottery scratch-off tickets.
Jamison-Lewis then allegedly placed both empty greeting cards back into the envelopes and returned them to the outgoing mail.
The envelope containing the T.J. Maxx gift card had been mailed by an undercover investigator from the District Attorney’s Office.
The following day, video surveillance allegedly captured Jamison-Lewis using the stolen T.J. Maxx gift card at the T.J. Maxx store located in Port Jefferson Station.
Jamison-Lewis was arrested on Nov. 24. Investigators say they found stolen pieces of mail hidden in her pants and in her pocketbook.
Search warrants at her home and car uncovered 20 more pieces of stolen mail
She resigned from the post office on Dec. 1
Jamison-Lewis was arraigned on Friday.
Customers of the post office say it makes them nervous about their mail.
“It’s a violation of our trust," says Patchogue resident George Lederer.
"I’ve been going to this post office for 64 years," says Oakdale resident Heidi Trautwein. "That’s a shame.”
The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS OIG) Northeast Area Field Office (NEAFO) says it's an ongoing investigation. They say any witness or victim should contact them.
