A Riverhead police officer was seriously injured Tuesday while trying to aid in a pursuit.
On Tuesday, Riverhead police were notified that a police pursuit had entered its jurisdiction from Southold on Sound Avenue, according to a release. Several agencies were reportedly involved in the pursuit, attempting to stop a vehicle in connection with an incident that occurred in Southold.
A Riverhead police vehicle attempted to respond to the area to assist, but while doing so was involved in a car accident while headed north on Osborn Avenue. Police say that as the vehicle attempted to pass another, both collided and the police car struck a fence.
The officer involved was treated at the scene and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center before being flown to Stony Brook University Hospital.
The driver of the second vehicle was not injured. The person who was being pursued by police fled their vehicle and remains at large.
