A retired NYPD sergeant is suspected of driving drunk, speeding and slamming into a marked police vehicle.
Long Beach police say Robert Garrity, 52, was driving drunk the wrong way on West Park Avenue around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say Garrity, a Long Beach resident, lost control of his Dodge Durango, took down two trees and then struck a police vehicle while the officer was waiting at a traffic light on the corner of Magnolia and Park avenues.
Garrity then allegedly crashed into a fire hydrant and refused a breathalyzer test at the scene.
Police say they also found an open container of alcohol under his seat.
The officer was taken to the hospital and has been treated and released.
Garrity was charged with assault, reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated.
Garrity was arraigned Wednesday and released on his own recognizance. He will be back in court at a later date.
