has reported, the New Jersey prostitute had been missing since May of 2010. Gilbert's disappearance led to the discovery of 10 sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway and kicked off the search for a serial killer. Investigators don't believe Gilbert was murdered, but rather that she drowned while running in a state of panic. Police found Gilbert's remains Tuesday morning a quarter-mile from where some of her belongings were discovered last week.
A cause of death has yet to be determined.
In a statement released this afternoon, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer has expressed his condolences to the Gilbert family, saying that he hopes that they will have some closure.Police: Remains found at Oak Beach likely Shannan Gilbert'sOne year since first body discovered along Ocean PkwyDormer: Purse with Shannan Gilbert's ID foundSources: Pocketbook found during Oak Beach searchSuffolk police: No new finds in latest Gilgo searchINTERVIEW: Forensic psychologist on Ocean Parkway investigationCops: We believe Shannan Gilbert's body may be near GilgoPolice: Shannan Gilbert's body may be at Gilgo BeachCops: 1 killer is behind Gilgo murders, probably a LIerNews 12 LI coverage: Bodies found near Ocean Parkway
