Police say two teens died early this morning in a crash on Walt Whitman Road near Route 110.

Authorities say two cars collided at around 1:15 a.m., killing 18-year-old driver Ray Vega and his 17-year-old passenger, Carmen Rivera-Gotay, both of Huntington Station.

Police say Vega was driving a 1996 Honda on Walt Whitman Road with Carmen in the passenger's seat. He attempted to pass his brother, Kevin Vega, who was driving a 1999 Pontiac in the next lane. Ray Vega lost control, hit a curb and then barreled into a tree.

Ray Vega was pronounced dead at the scene. Rivera-Gotay was transported to Plainview Hospital-North Shore, where she was later pronounced dead. Kevin Vega and his passenger were uninjured.

Suffolk County Police Detective Sgt. John O'Sullivan described it as one of the worst crashes the department has ever seen. O'Sullivan says speed and driver inexperience were factors in the crash.

Police say there is no evidence at this time that the young drivers were drag-racing.
