Suffolk homicide detectives are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that took place Tuesday in Mastic Beach.

According to police, 42-year-old Michael Gilbert called family members after 1 a.m. asking them to pick up his 15-month-old son. The family then called police, who arrived at the scene on Mayfield Drive and heard a gun shot.

Police say Gilbert shot his 34-year-old wife, Melanie, before taking his own life.

The couple's son was unharmed is currently with family members.
