Police say a Syosset man found with an assault rifle and tactical gear pretended to be a federal air marshal.
Nassau police arrested Mark Vicars, 49, and charged him with 17 counts of criminal weapons possession as a result of a joint investigation with the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force and the TSA.
When police pulled him over on Jericho Turnpike Thursday morning, Vicars allegedly turned on police lights and showed them a fake ID and badge.
Investigators say they found a loaded handgun and a knife on Vicars and searched his car.
"In the backseat of the vehicle was a loaded Daniel Defense .223 caliber assault rifle along with ballistic body armor vest and a tactical vest," says Nassau Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun.
Officers found more weapons and about 8,300 rounds of ammunition at Vicars' home.
A Nassau County judge ordered Vicars to remain behind bars on a $300,000 bond.
