What began as a routine traffic stop on the Southern State Parkway turned into a chase that ended after the suspect allegedly slammed his car into a state trooper in a Wantagh cul-de-sac Wednesday afternoon.
State police say officers tried to stop an unidentified driver with a suspended registration around 1:40 p.m.
They say he led police on a chase instead of pulling over.
The course led to Michele Lane, police cornered the suspect, who allegedly shifted into reverse and pinned an officer against his squad car. That officer had minor injuries and is expected to be OK.
"The police cars closed him in, and he was going crazy in the car," said neighbor Emily Nicolich. "He kept going back and forth, trying to hit both police cars, backing into the cars just trying to get out of here."
Police say the driver had a warrant out for his arrest from the NYPD.
He will now face new charges that include assault.
