An attempted burglary in Riverhead was stopped Wednesday by an armed homeowner who is also an off-duty Suffolk County deputy sheriff.

Police say the suspect attempted to break into the home around 4 p.m. on Maple Wood Lane.

They say the suspect was confronted by residents who tried to stop him. When he did not stop, police say the off-duty officer shot him once.

The suspect was taken to the hospital.
