Police have released pictures of a man wanted in a fatal shooting in Mastic Beach.
Police say Joseph Scalafani is believed to be the shooter who killed Alex Smith, the younger brother of Mastic's Joe "The Beast" Smith - a former Long Island light heavyweight boxing champion.
Police say Smith, a father of four, was shot around 2 a.m. Saturday following a confrontation that occurred in the parking lot of Linsa Torr's Place
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison says Smith was with Scalafani's ex-girlfriend at the time of the shooting.
"They actually have two children in common, so this looks like this might have been a crime of hate and jealousy because it seems like it was old baby father shooting new boyfriend in a really disturbing, concerning crime," Harrison says.
Police say the 32-year-old suspect is known to be around the Mastic, Mastic Beach and Shirley area.
They say they did not recover the murder weapon at the scene and that Scalafani is considered armed and dangerous.
Smith's mother, Marie Degen, is pleading with her son's accused killer to turn himself in.
"We want you to bring yourself in so our family can move forward and bring justice for Alex," Degen says.
Anyone with information about Scalafani's whereabouts is asked to call police at 1-800-220-TIPS.
