Police: Mastic father of 4, younger brother of boxer Joe Smith Jr., fatally shot outside bar
Suffolk police say a 30-year-old Mastic resident was killed in an overnight shooting.
Police say Alex Smith was shot at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday following a confrontation that occurred in the parking lot of Linsa Torr's Place. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
The victim is one of eight children in the Smith family and the younger brother of former WBO light heavyweight champion boxer Joe “The Beast” Smith Jr.
His family says Smith leaves behind four young children, ages 10 months to 9 years old.
Tracy Smith, the victim’s stepmother, says she and her husband were devastated to hear about the death from police.
“Everybody's upset right now,” she said. “It's just devastating. I'm in shock."
Tina Smith, the victim’s sister, says she spoke to their brother Joe Jr. about the death earlier today.
“He's a mess. We're all a mess trying to process it. It's crazy,” she said. “He was a very loving person. He had a big family that loved him."
Smith’s friends say he was well-known and liked by many in the hamlet.
“Whenever I saw him, it was always high fives, ‘Hey how are you’, smiles, stuff like that,” said Michael Bambrick.
Authorities say they are currently searching for the shooter and investigating the motive of the shooting.
Detectives ask anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
The Smith family has also set up a GiveSendGo page to help cover the cost of the funeral.
