Police say a man was hit by a car and then shot in the face by the driver Tuesday at around 10 a.m. in Patchogue.
Police say the incident occurred behind a row of businesses on South Ocean Avenue.
An earlier dispute between the suspect and the victim is what sparked the attack, according to detectives.
The 35-year-old male victim is being treated at a hospital for several injuries.
Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri told News 12 that he was told that the victim suffered a broken femur and hip in the crash.
Schools in the Patchogue-Medford district were placed on lockout immediately after the shooting. The school superintendent sent out a notice to inform parents that the lockout was ordered as a precaution as police looked for the shooter.
The lockout was lifted about 90 minutes later after police determined the suspect left the area.
Pontieri says the suspect fled the scene in a gray BMW.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Suffolk Crime stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
