Stamford police have arrested an 18-year-old man who they say brought a loaded handgun into the Ferguson Library Monday afternoon.

"I can't believe it, that's crazy," Rocio Fernandez says. "Really? Here in Stamford? Wow."

Markiss Lindsay has been charged with illegal transfer of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit and possession of a high-capacity magazine, according to police.

Authorities say the 9 MM handgun was loaded with 11 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber when investigators found it inside a backpack on the first floor of the library.

"This world, man," Jacky Rivera says. "It's just filled with lunatics."

No one was hurt, but residents are on edge and wondering if the library will implement added safety measures like metal detectors in response to the incident.

"I guess you have to have metal detectors," Jerry Gallagher says. "I thought that would have been in place."

Lindsay was released on a $100,000 bond, according to police.

He's scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 24.
