Police said a male who was crossing a street in West Hempstead was struck and killed Sunday afternoon.

They said it happened just before 1 p.m. on Woodfield Road.

Neighbors said accidents along the stretch road are common. They described the impact as being so loud that it sounded like two cars hit head on.

"I was in my house and it sounded like a car crash. That's how hard they hit. There was no other car involved. It was just the car and the person. It must have been a really high impact," said resident Mike Binstock.

Police said the unidentified male was crossing the road near Lindberg Street and was struck by a car going south on Woodfield.

The victim later died at the hospital. The driver of the car stayed at the scene.

Neighbors said accidents along Woodfield are common.

Binstock has lived on the road for nine years and witnessed multiple accidents there. He added that he wasn't shocked that there was another one on Sunday. He said cars speed often because there are no traffic signals or crosswalks for a long stretch of Woodfield Road.

"People going back and forth on Woodfield, crossing a lot people whizzing by, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often," He continued. "We need traffic lights, speed bumps, something to deter people from flying down this road."

As of Sunday night, police had not identified the victim or confirmed his age.
