Suffolk police say 27-year-old William Veitch-Canete was arrested for taking photos of a 10-year-old girl changing her clothes inside a Burlington fitting room in Commack on Sunday night.
Veitch-Canete was working inside the clothing store at the time, according to police.
The 27-year-old now faces a slew of charges including unlawful surveillance in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a child. Residents in the area say they are shocked to hear about the incident.
“It’s awful, I feel like people should feel safe when they’re with their families and not have to worry about things like that," said Jay Kraidman, of Hauppauge. "It’s good that they caught him and hopefully they’ll take more measures in place to prevent that from happening.”
In a statement, Burlington said:
At Burlington, the safety of our customers is paramount. The alleged behavior at our Veterans Memorial Highway store is completely at odds with our core values. We take this matter very seriously and are actively investigating the incident in cooperation with local authorities. The associate involved has been suspended while this investigation is completed. Should you have other questions about this matter, we request that you direct them to the Suffolk County Police Department.
