Police investigate possible hit-and-run that killed jogger in Laurel
A jogger was killed in a possible hit-and-run this morning in Laurel.
Police say that 49-year-old James Callaghan, of Jamesport, was struck and killed by multiple cars on Route 25 near Laurel Lane. The crash happened before 6 a.m.
Callaghan was pronounced dead at the scene.
So far, there have been no arrests. Police say they are also looking into whether fog played a role.
The crash closed one of the two east-to-west traffic arteries on the North Fork for hours.
Police say Callaghan was not wearing a reflective vest, and may have been distracted because he was wearing earphones.
Local motorists say the 50 mph speed limit often encourages drivers to go too fast.
