Police are investigating claims that a football player was hazed at Farmingdale High School.According to Newsday, a junior at the school says a senior tried to sexually assault him with a broomstick in a locker room last Thursday. The attorney for the alleged victim says his client was able to grab the broomstick and snap it in half.
Police say based on their investigation, the incident was an example of locker room horseplay and not a crime. The student?s father vehemently disagrees. He and his lawyer are pressing for police and the district attorney to hand the case over to the special victims? unit.
Students that spoke with News 12 Long Island say that they believe the incident was intended to be a joke and nothing more. The firm representing the junior also represented two victims in the 2003 hazing case at Wellington C. Mepham High School. In that case, older players on the football team sexually abused some of their teammates with broomsticks and pine cones at a training camp in Pennsylvania.
The Farmingdale Union Free School District is only saying that there was an interaction between the two students, and that no one was hurt. A statement from the district reads:
"The incident was thoroughly investigated and immediate and appropriate disciplinary measures were taken by the district."
The senior was given an in-school suspension. Although the junior's claim was made last week, detectives were back at the school Tuesday.
