A home-health aide is accused of stealing thousands of dollars' worth of jewelry from a woman whom she was supposed to be helping.
Melissa Acevedo, 27, of Selden, appeared in court Wednesday. Police say she stole more than $3,000 in jewelry from the 74-year-old woman's Coram home two times in May.
Acevedo was employed by Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk at the time of the alleged thefts, which the victim had reported to police.
