A Hicksville man is charged with attempted murder for allegedly attacking his elderly mother and trying to throw her down a set of stairs.
Nassau police say it happened at the family's Hicksville home Friday afternoon.
According to court documents, 39-year-old Anil Khandpur tried to throw his mother down the basement stairs while screaming, "I'm going to kill you."
Prosecutors say the mother, age 82, was able to break free, but that's when her son allegedly bit her cheek before she locked herself in her bedroom for several hours.
Police say the son broke the hinges on the bedroom door and once his mother left the room, he allegedly punched her several times in the back of the head.
Neighbors declined to speak on camera, but told News 12 that say police have made frequent visits to the home over the years. They said the son hasn't been the same since he was hit by a car many years ago.
In court on Saturday, Khandpur's legal aid attorney referenced settlement money from a car accident, but didn't discuss specifics.
Prosecutors say Khandpur has 17 prior arrests, including two felony and three misdemeanor convictions. He was also allegedly in violation of a standing do-not-harass order that was issued after a 2017 incident also involving his mother as the victim.
In addition to the attempted murder charges, Khandpur is facing multiple other charges. He was ordered held on $500,000 bail.
