Police: Hempstead man arrested for weapons charges at scene of bicycle accident

A Hempstead man who fell off his bicycle Friday was arrested when officers at the scene found him in possession of a handgun, police say.

Authorities say Ernaldo Meus fell off his bicycle and sustained minor injuries in the parking lot of the Cherry Valley Shopping Center just after 10 a.m.

Officers who arrived to help him say they discovered a handgun in his bag with a loaded magazine.

Meus was arrested and hospitalized for treatment, according to authorities.

Police say the charges against him include criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon.
