Officials say a hand grenade was found in the water at Michael Murphy Memorial Park in Lake Ronkonkoma yesterday.
According to officials, children reportedly found the grenade in the water around 7 p.m.
Police say a 911 caller reported that kids picked up what they thought was a rock. The rock turned out to be a hand grenade with a pin intact that appeared to have been in the water for some time.
According to police, the beach and park were evacuated and a robot was used to destroy the grenade in a hole in the sand.
Police say it is unknown if the grenade was active or not.
