Police say strangers came to the aid after a three-car crash in Setauket Friday.
The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. at the intersection of Nesconset Highway and Nicolls Road.
One car involved was turned onto its side. Police say several good Samaritans witnessed the crash and held up the vehicle to prevent it from toppling over.
Five people were injured, one of them seriously. Information on the victims' identities and current conditions have not been released.
The accident closed Nesconset Highway both ways from Nicolls Road to Pond Path for several hours while crews cleared the scene.
