Police are searching for the driver who they say hit and killed a man in Hewlett and drove away.

The incident happened on Wednesday just after 10 p.m.

Detectives say the man was crossing Broadway when he was hit by a dark colored SUV.

Police say the driver got out of the vehicle, dragged the victim to the side of the road and then got back into the car and drove off.

The man struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver has been identified by police as 74-year-old Jeffrey Frank, of Hewlett.

Frank was known throughout the Five Towns as “JJ.”

He was a longtime volunteer with the Hewlett Fire Department and a beloved DJ who spent many years at Backstage in Woodmere.

“Everybody cared about JJ. The community looked out for him, he looked out for the community," said Chris McManus.
