Police say a driver who was high on drugs flipped his car while trying to evade park rangers, and a passenger was critically hurt.
The incident began when Smithtown park rangers approached a suspicious car parked near the gate to Short Beach Town Park shortly after 10 p.m. Friday. The rangers say the car sped off, disobeying commands to stop.
The rangers followed and found that the car, a Nissan Maxima, had crashed and overturned in the woods. A utility pole was also knocked down.
Police say 21-year-old Alberto Guzman, of St. James, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
A 19-year-old passenger identified as Julian Arango was taken to Stony Brook Hospital in critical condition.
Guzman and a front seat passenger, 19-year-old Eric Gomez, were hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have information in the case to call them at 631-854-8452.
