Police say a woman has been charged with fatally stabbing her mother inside an Oceanside home on Monday.
Police say Irma Grossman, 79, was found bleeding from a neck wound in her Terrell Avenue home shortly after 12:30 p.m. Grossman was pronounced dead several hours later.
Detectives say Grossman's daughter, 56-year-old Suzan Grossman-Kerner, became "enraged" during a fight about her medical treatment for ongoing mental health issues. They say she grabbed a kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbed her mother in the back, neck and skull. Detectives say Grossman didn't die right away and that it was her daughter who called 911.
Grossman-Kerner's attorney tells News 12 that his client suffers from bipolar disorder. The attorney requested in court Tuesday that Grossman-Kerner be put on suicide watch.
"What is clear is that she does have prior psychiatric history," says defense attorney Todd Greenberg. "Most likely that psychiatric history will enter into the defense of this action."
Grossman-Kerner is charged with second-degree murder. She is being held without bail.
Grossman-Kerner's estranged husband told News 12 Long Island that his mother-in-law was a wonderful grandmother.
