A North Massapequa dad was arraigned Wednesday for allegedly preparing to shoot up heroin with a friend in front of his young sons.

Police say officers responded to North Broadway Tuesday after a call came in that two young boys were throwing rocks at passing cars.

Upon arrival, officers discovered two children, 6 and 8 years old, standing near a parked van.

An investigation revealed the children's father, Daniel Bosco, 40, of North Massapequa, was sitting in the front passenger seat of the van with the door open. Officers then observed Daniel Barberis, 40, of North Massapequa, standing in front of Bosco - preparing to inject him in the foot with heroin.

The officers placed both men under arrest, and the children were transported from the scene and left in the custody of a family member. No injuries were reported.

Bosco is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminally possessing a hypodermic instrument and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Barberis is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminally possessing a hypodermic instrument.

Barberis was bailed out by his sister. She told News 12 Long Island that he is currently a nurse and suffers from PTSD from his 10 years as a medic in the Air Force during the Gulf wars.

She says he's been clean but recently relapsed when he couldn't get help through Veterans Affairs.

"The VA is overswamped...I judge him by heart, you judge him by his actions. Judge him by his good ones too. He defended your country, and this is how we treat our veterans," she said.

Barberis was released on $1,000 bail.

Bosco's bail was set at $2,500. The judge also made him sign an order of protection involving the children.
