Police combed Long Island waterways for drunken boaters on the Fourth of July holiday.
News 12 Long Island's Eileen Lehpamer rode along with a Nassau County police patrol Wednesday.
"We are looking to enforce speed regulations, reckless operation regulations and certainly impaired boater regulations," said Officer Joel Fuoco.
While patrolling the waters, Nassau's Marine Bureau also conducted safety inspections.
During the busy boating season, police also make use of their helicopter in case of emergencies farther out at sea. They also use vehicles such as ATVs for easier responses to emergencies on a beach.
Police say it's all about keeping the Fourth of July fun.
"If anybody needs us, we're just seconds away, said Officer Ashley Copertino. "We have a lot of people; the heat gets exhausting."
Police say they believe the message of not drinking and boating is being heard. Last Fourth of July, Nassau and Suffolk police say they did not arrest a single intoxicated boater.
