UPDATE 7:40 PM: Suffolk County’s Arson Unit found the body of a young man at the Mattituck home. Suffolk County Homicide has taken over and is now investigating. Original story is below.
A fire ripped through a home Tuesday in Mattituck.
Southold Police Chief Steve Grattan said that three people who were home at the time of the fire safely exited the home. He said one person is unaccounted for.
News 12 talked to a man named Jorge Ramirez, who says the man who's unaccounted for is his friend. He said they grew up in Guatemala together. Ramirez and a group of young men, also friends of the missing man, sat across from the house, hoping to hear good news Tuesday. But none came.
At least six departments responded to the scene on Middle Road.
The fire began around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, and first responders remained on scene into the evening. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
The Red Cross says it has sent its Long Island disaster action team to the site.
