A Suffolk hotel was evacuated because of a chemical spill.

Dozens of guests had to leave the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Melville on Monday.

It happened on the border of Suffolk and Nassau counties.

First responders from both counties converged on the hotel for what Suffolk police say was a hazmat situation.

Suffolk police say it all happened just after 1:30 p.m.

An employee at the Homewood Suites spilled pool chemicals.

Police say he was taken to NUMC with injuries not considered life-threatening.

In addition to Suffolk police, emergency crews from Melville, Plainview, Huntington Manor and Hicksville all responded to the scene.

Evacuees say they were startled by the loud, piercing alarm blaring through the building.

A man staying at the hotel says he had to rush out with his 95-year-old mother-in-law.

Suffolk officials say another person inside the building was evaluated at the scene.

News 12 also reached out to the general manager of the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Melville for comment about the incident but has not heard back yet.
