Nassau police say carjackers are setting up Chinese food delivery drivers in the county and stealing their cars.

"Individuals are calling Chinese food establishments, they're placing orders, either to fictitious addresses or to residents that are not actually ordering the food, and when the delivery person gets out of the car and goes up to the residents, these individuals are jumping into the car," says Nassau Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun.

It's happened at least five times since December, according to authorities.

Police say one victim was a 54-year-old Chinese food delivery driver for the Happy Wok restaurant in Cedarhurst. He was trying to make a delivery on Bernard Street in North Lawrence Wednesday to an address that doesn't exist.

He knocked on a neighbor's door, and police say that's when two men jumped out of a minivan, hopped into his car and took off. The victimized driver had left credit cards, cash and other belongings in his car. Authorities later recovered his vehicle in Inwood. Four juvenile suspects were arrested, but police say they're not sure if all of the thefts are connected.

Similar thefts took place twice in North Woodmere and once each in Valley Stream and Franklin Square.

LeBrun says drivers should make sure to lock their cars when they get out to make deliveries.

"If these individuals who are delivering the food do not leave their keys in the car, this would be a moot point," he says.
