A Bridgeport man is facing several charges for allegedly stopping vehicles while holding a gun, police say.

Police were called to the intersection of Stratford and Union avenues just after 7 p.m. Sunday for a report of an armed man stopping drivers.

Officers were informed that prior to their arrival, Deron Brooks approached drivers and pointed a handgun at them.

One person told police they were hit in the head with the end of the gun.

Once police arrived, Brooks refused to drop the gun and tried to position himself in between a truck and officers. They say the truck drove off and Brooks attempted to hold on, but he fell into the street.

Brooks was arrested following a struggle with police.

Police were able to locate the truck, and the gun was recovered from inside its bed.

Brooks' charges include robbery, assault, possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a firearm.

Brooks' bond was set at $500,000, and he was arraigned Monday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Freddy Neal at 203 581-5100 or the department's TIPS line at 203-576-8477.
