Suffolk Police Commissioner Tim Sini held a news conference Friday to speak about safety at Long Island bars, restaurants and nightclubs in the wake of the Orlando shooting.
Sini says police will increase the amount of inspections at such establishments, and they will make sure those inspections take place during hours of operation.
In the event of an emergency like an active shooter situation, police say overcrowding and limited access to exits could lead to more deaths and injuries.
Any venues that do not comply with safety and fire codes will be cited.
Residents tells News 12 that they are more aware of their surroundings following the attack.
Forty-nine people were killed and dozens more were injured in the Orlando nightclub shooting.
