A Bohemia man was arrested Monday, accused of posing as the owner of a construction company and scamming a woman out of $16,500 for a renovation project that was never done.
Suffolk County police say Paul Sanderson falsely claimed to own a legitimate construction business and was hired by an Amityville woman to renovate a storefront at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream.
Investigators say Sanderson visited the woman's home and presented forged insurance documents before taking a $16,500 payment for the project on March 30.
Police said no materials were ever delivered and work on the renovation never began.
The woman later contacted the construction company and discovered Sanderson had no affiliation with the business. She reported the incident to police on June 16.
Sanderson was arrested and charged with grand larceny and identity theft.
Police are asking anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Sanderson to contact the Suffolk County Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit at 631-852-6821.
