Police say a 90-year-old man has died after being hit by an alleged drunken driver on the East End.
According to police, George Kurovics, of Jamesport, was walking on Main Road near Herricks Lane when he was hit just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Kurovics had been the owner of a barbershop in Rocky Point since 1948.
Police say the woman who hit Kurovics was Diane O'Neill, 65, of Farmingville - a veteran math teacher at Southold High School.
A statement from Superintendent of Southold Union Free School District David A. Gamberg said that O'Neill is a veteran educator with more than 20 years of service and no prior incidents. Her status with the district is pending.
O'Neill pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated charges at her arraignment Tuesday. Her son paid a $10,000 cash bond.
Meanwhile, many patrons stopped by the Rocky Point barbershop to offer their condolences.
"This is a huge loss for the town," one customer told News 12.
