Police say a man was fatally struck on the Long Island Expressway overnight after he had been involved in an accident with another vehicle.
It happened in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Exit 49 in Melville.
Suffolk police say 31-year-old Eric Preto, of Selden was driving at around 12:45 a.m. Saturday with his wife and 2-year-old son in the car when he rear ended a Mercedes. According to police, the two vehicles came to a stop in the middle lane, and Preto got out to check on the other driver.
They say he was then struck by a passing Subaru, killing him. A fourth car then slammed into Preto's Nissan, according to police.
Everyone remained at the scene and no charges have been filed in connection with the case at this time.
No one else was injured at the crash scene, although others involved were taken to the hospital for evaluations.
Preto leaves behind a wife and a 2-year-old son, who were both at the scene when the crash happened, according to police. A family member tells News 12 that Preto's wife is currently pregnant with their second child.
The family was heading home from a wedding in New Jersey at the time of the crash.
