Police say three people were shot in Hempstead on Monday night.
Hempstead Police Chief Paul Johnson says police responded to a ShotSpotter alert of gunshots near Maple Avenue around 8:50 p.m.
When police arrived, they found one victim with a gunshot wound to the back.
People at the scene told police that there were two other victims who drove themselves to the hospital.
Police then received calls from a hospital that it received two gunshot victims with injuries not considered life-threatening.
All of the victims are now in stable condition.
Police believe the shots were fired from the intersection of Maple and Evans avenues toward an apartment complex.
LaMont Johnson, of the Hempstead school board, says the community is "definitely concerned."
"The community is very scared, scared for the safety of their children out playing and adults also," Johnson says. "We are asking for special attention to this area, we need more support from the police department."
Police say it is unknown if the victims were targeted.
Police say the victims were in a crowd of people hanging out, and it is unknown if they knew each other.
