Authorities say there were no major injuries in a 29-car pileup that closed the westbound side of Sunrise Highway Thursday morning.
Suffolk police say the incident began around 10:30 a.m. near Exit 49 in Sayville when a mini school bus slid on the roadway and overturned. There were no children inside.
Then, a FedEx tractor-trailer jackknifed across the roadway, leaving cars with major damages.
Drivers involved in the crash told News 12 Long Island that the incident was over in a matter of seconds.
"Something like you see on TV, but you never experience," says Frank Grieco, of Eastport. He says he swerved out of the way, but was hit in the back and on the side of his vehicle.
Hours after the crash, tow trucks were lined up to remove the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
The westbound Sunrise Highway lanes were partially opened around 12:30 p.m. and then completely reopened around 2:30 p.m.
