A 23-year-old woman is dead and four other people are hurt after police say a driver didn't stop at a red light on the North Fork.
The incident occurred on Route 48 at Westphalia Road in Mattituck.
Police say it happened Sunday just after 4 p.m. where a Ford SUV traveling west slammed into a Honda Civic that was stopped at the red light.
"It pushed that car probably a good 55 to 75 feet or so," said Southold Police Chief Martin Flatley.
Officials say the woman who was killed was a passenger in the Civic.
The injured people were rushed to a hospital. One person was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center.
Flatley says he believes distracted driving was the cause of the crash.
"We did our preliminary investigation and there was no reason to believe that either of the drivers was intoxicated or had been drinking," said Flatley.
He also says speed was not a factor.
Police identified the 23-year-old woman as Rebecca Connolly, from Huntington. John Vincente, also from Huntington, was driving the Honda. Richard Morabito, from Orient, was driving the Ford SUV with passenger Ronald Baker.
Police say they're not expecting to file charges.
